All Natural Mascara Recipe

I have read recently that lavender may complement some of your favorite shampoos, lotions, or skin care products. I am attempting to make all of my self-care products and cosmetics so making my own all natural mascara was the natural next step for me.
Ingredients:
- 1 tsp coconut oil
- 1 tsp shea butter — where to find
- 1 1/2 tsp beeswax — where to find
- 2 tsp jojoba oil — where to find
- 2 capsules activated charcoal — where to find
- 2 drops Vitamin E oil — where to find
Equipment:
- double boiler — like this
- empty mascara tube — where to find
Directions:
- In a double boiler, melt the first 4 ingredients
- Once melted remove from heat and add in the charcoal and Vitamin E
- Pour into a plastic bag and allow to cool enough to touch
- Cut small corner off plastic bag and use it like a cake decorator to pipe it into the empty mascara tube
- Apply as you would your regular mascara and smile to yourself….no more chemicals on those lashes!

It sure does! Although it is winter here right now and I have now worn it in the hot summer. But, I am inside where it is warm and it has not melted or been gooey.

Is it possible to do a softer brown, for mature (I love the sound of that;particularly as I don’t consider myself as “OLD” just yet…I will be 60 this July)women? Black is just too, harsh after you reach a certain point…..

Do you mean cocoa powder like you eat? I have always worn brown as my hair is blonde, light brown.

Wonder if I can use it with soft contacts, or perhaps just use at night while sleeping for therapeutic mascara~

I have soft contacts and haven’t had any issues. If you wear it at night, you might wake up a little scary looking! If you plan to use it therapeutically, I would omit the charcoal from the recipe 🙂

I’m thinking about trying this out. I don’t wear make up but this could be fun. I’d go with the cocoa myself. I’m also thinking that I’ll need to find a glass mascara bottle because I don’t like the sound of pouring the hot ingredients into a leeching plastic. if I wouldn’t eat it, I don’t put it on my skin. Thanks for the ideas!

You don’t have to worry about that. I found the mixture cools extremely fast. It’s so hard to find glass mascara bottles. The problem with this recipe though is it SMUGES super bad!

I’m going to make this before I leave on vacation to a very hot climate, should I double the beeswax to keep it more solid? Can I wash out an old mascara tube (will sanitize with alcohol as well.)

I have washed out old containers before, but it’s tricky to do. The dishwasher actually helped the most. I would use caution with adding more beeswax because it will turn solid in the tube.

Cecilia, I am sorry you do not like the new links. I installed a new plugin that makes the links more visual. I liked that it shows the price when you hover. Maybe it’s just appealing to me, being a visual person. But I found it to be more user friendly.

I apologize for nitpicking, but the point was when I clicked on them I was led to a ‘confirm that you want this in your shopping basket’ page on amazon, and when I clicked ‘no’ I wasn’t taken to the item, I was taken to amazon home page. making me do a whole lot of work if I wanted to learn more about the product rather than just buy / don’ buy.
and I AM sorry, because your recipe / idea is BRILLIANT!

“…no more chemicals on those lashes!” Well, except for all the chemicals that leached from the plastic bag when the hot mixture was poured into it. I would wait till it had cooled as much as possible before pouring it in the bag for piping.

I did let it cool, otherwise it would have burned my hand. It is in the plastic bag for a very short period. I suppose you could also use a glass dropper.

Have you ever worn this while swimming? Any idea how waterproof it is? I’m really wanting to dive into making my own, but desperately need a waterproof mascara. Thanks in advance!

I have not worn it in the water. I wear contacts and when I am planning on swimming, I usually take them out and take off my makeup. It should hold up pretty well though!

I have not had any issues with spoilage or anything, however, after a few months I had a batch dry up a bit — got more clumpy. So, use it up within a month or so 🙂

My double boiler seems like it would be too large for this small of an amount to put in it. It is only a couple+ of tablespoons worth. So, how do you use yours?

You could melt it in a small glass bowl over a smaller pan. My double boiler is pretty little

Hey there. Great post! I am eager to torym can you tell me how many tubes this recipe will make and what size the tube was you used? I have some 10 ml I want to try this with. Just curious hiw many it will fill and how many times I should double the recipe to make more.

thanks! i went ahead and doubled the recipe to make more. i was able to fill 5 tubes but the mascara is runny. I do live in Florida but is there anything else i can add to it to help it hold? it is so pretty once applied but as soon as i bat my lashes it’s all over the place. I am thinking i did not add enough beeswax. I was running low so I think it may have been less then 3 tsp. help me wonda!!!

I have also had the same problem with flaking and smearing. It doesn’t dry on my lashes. What did I do wrong?
